Dentures

Removable dental prostheses, also known as removable dentures or removable dental appliances, are dental prosthetic devices that can be taken out of the mouth by the patient for cleaning and maintenance. These prostheses are used to replace missing teeth and surrounding oral structures, providing functional and aesthetic benefits. Here are the types of removable dental prostheses offered at Cole Harbour Dental Centre:

  • Complete Dentures: used when all the natural teeth are missing in either the upper or lower arch, or both. They consist of a flesh-colored acrylic base that resembles gum tissue, onto which artificial teeth are attached. Complete dentures are custom-made to fit the individual's mouth and are held in place by suction, saliva, and the muscles of the mouth.

  • Partial Dentures: used when some natural teeth remain in the mouth. They consist of a metal or acrylic framework that supports artificial teeth. The framework may have metal clasps or precision attachments that connect to the remaining natural teeth for stability. Partial dentures not only replace missing teeth but also help prevent the remaining natural teeth from shifting out of position.

  • Removable Overdentures: combine the benefits of dental implants and dentures. Implants are placed in the jawbone, and the denture is designed to attach securely to the implants using various attachment systems (such as bars, balls, or locator attachments). This provides increased stability and retention compared to conventional dentures.

  • Immediate Dentures: placed immediately after the extraction of the remaining natural teeth. These dentures are pre-fabricated and are ready to be inserted into the mouth on the same day as the extractions. Immediate dentures help maintain aesthetics and function while the gums heal, but adjustments may be required as the gum tissues change during the healing process.

Removable dental prostheses require proper care and maintenance to ensure longevity and oral health. It's important to follow your dentist's instructions regarding cleaning, soaking, and regular dental visits for adjustments or relining as needed. Over time, adjustments or replacements may be necessary to maintain proper fit and function.

It's recommended to consult with a dental professional to determine the most suitable removable dental prosthesis for your specific needs. They will evaluate your oral health, discuss your treatment goals, and develop a personalized treatment plan to restore your teeth, enhance your smile, and improve your overall oral function.
